The Monoprice Voxel is, what we love to say, a perfect example of a plug-and-play 3D printer, it even comes calibrated from factory. Take the printer out of the box, load the filament, plug the printer and start printing straightaway. In some cases, print bed calibration is required but it is done in less than 5 min with the assisted levelling system provided. In other cases, Wi-Fi setup can drive you crazy due to the small space on the touchscreen keypad to introduce the password. The printer may also need to be updated, but It can be done easily and faster through the ethernet connection.
The printer comes with:
• MP Voxel 3D printer
• Spool filament
• AC Power
• “Thank you” card
• Unclogging tool
• Allen wrench
• Package grease
• User’s manual
The Monoprice Voxel is an FDM/FFF (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer with a cartesian x-y-z motion mechanism that uses 5 stepper motors: one moves the print bed in y-axis, other moves the extruder in x-axis. Two more are used to move the extruder up/down on the z-axis and one more is used to extrude the filament through the hot end.
MP Voxel is one of the few 3D printers at this price range that comes fully enclosed with black and clear plastics. The clear panels on the front and top of the printer are used as lifting doors to provide access to the printing area and the mechanisms. In addition, the closed frame is also equipped with a built-in camera to monitor the print remotely.
The maximum print volume is 3.375 litres (150 x 150 x 150 mm). That is big enough to handle most of the printing objects found in Mito3D. The print base is heated, which helps when printing advanced materials that require high temperatures. The print bed is removable and flexible, helping to remove and clean the printing mat easily.
The lateral side of the printer hides and holds the filament which is driven automatically through the bowden feeding extruder to the hot end. The hot end can be removed from the printer very easily and nozzle changes are very easy to replace or clean as well.
Regarding the printer size, it is less than half a meter wide. Hence, it can easily be placed on your desk or any place in your house where Wi-Fi connection is available which is really convenient.
The MP Voxel’s interface is user-friendly and very simple to use. Monoprice has removed the physical button to navigate through the different menus and options. Instead, a touch screen located on the top-right corner takes its place to navigate through the printing interface. However, the small size of the screen makes the interaction difficult when trying to type the Wi-Fi password.
Printing can be done using three different sources: Internal memory of 8GB, USB or Wi-Fi connection. The printing files are generated by the MP FlashPrint software or other slicers like Cura, which works with Voxel as well as other Monoprice printers.
Regarding the special features of the MP Voxel 3D printer, we are happy to say that there are many of them to talk about. The most notorious is the enclosed frame that provides a better temperature control while printing. This feature provides better quality prints and a steadier frame structure.
Enclosed in the printer are hidden many other features such as the on-board camera that allows the user to monitor the 3D printer from any part of the world, given that the printer is on-line.
As mentioned on the design description, the enclosure also has a compartment for the filament spool. Here is where the filament feed mechanism is also placed. The extrusion system does not only provide automatic feeding, it also recognizes when the filament is running low to pause/resume the printer.
Regarding the hot end, the user will be able to detach it from the printer completely very easily. This helps the user to clean or replace the nozzle in a faster and pleasant way without distorting the printer.
Another characteristic that needs to be highlighted on this printer is the assisted print bed levelling. It is not totally automatic like other printers, but it really works well along with all the other extra features this affordable 3D printer includes!
Finally, it is important to remark the removable and flexible print bed. This should be a standard add-on that many printer designers should consider. It helps the user to remove the print from the bed without forcing or losing calibration of the printer.
MP Voxel produces very impressive prints with great detail and smoothness. Although it is considered a low-cost 3D printer, its minimum layer height of 50 microns helps to achieve natural curves and surfaces. However, the bowden filament system does not help to prevent retraction issues which can be seen on this printer.
The MP Voxel is one of the best printers at this price range. It delivers plenty of extra features to achieve fast and high-quality prints. The enclosed structure makes it different from the other printers and the feeding system is excellent and easy to use. Although it does not come with a fully auto-levelling system, it provides enough help to level the heated bed in less than 5 min. With Monoprice Voxel, you will never waste more filament or have to worry about running out of filament. The printer comes with an excellent filament sensor that pauses and resumes the print when filament is running low.
Overall, we believe that the Voxel is a great 3D printer and also think that if you are thinking about buying this 3D printer you should definitely go ahead. You won't be disappointed!
