Unboxing & setup

The great thing about the Monoprice Select Mini V2 is that it comes fully assembled and calibrated. Basically, you can start printing straightaway after unboxing. Not even a switch button is required to power the printer after being plugged. Once it is powered, the interface is pretty intuitive to guide you through the final setup before printing such us filament loading and print bed levelling. Its small size makes the printer portable and quickly to set-up at any place making it ideal for beginners!

The printer comes with:

  • MP Select Mini V2 3D printer
  • Filament Rack
  • AC Power adapter
  • AC Power cord
  • Micro USB cable
  • MicroSD card
  • Plastic bed scrapper
  • Bed levelling hex wrench
  • Sample PLA filament
Design and build quality

The Monoprice Select Mini V2 is mainly made of metal which makes the printer very heavy but very steady during printing. All the mechanisms (Stepper motors, gears and belts) are hidden behind the metal covers which provides a better look compared to its competitors.

The printing technology used for this printer is FDM/FFF (Fused Deposition Modeling) with a cartesian x-y-z motion mechanism. It makes use of 4 stepper motors: one for the print bed y-axis, one for the extruder x-axis, other to control the height of the extruder and other to extrude the filament.

The aluminium heated bed comes with a printing mat that provides excellent adhesion for PLA, PETG and other difficult plastics such as ABS, flexible materials. However, the mat detaches very easily after a few prints.

The hot end used is an all-metal E3D V6 clone with a bowden extrusion system. The maximum hot-end temperature is 250 ºC which makes excellent PLA printings and other advanced materials such as ABS or PETG filaments. The Monoprice Mini V2 extruder system uses a single 30mm cooling fan that acts as a cooler for both heatsink of E3D V6 clone and the extruded filament. This can be dangerous as the fan can be stopped by the firmware causing clogging or other temperature issues during printing.

Firmware & Interface

The Monoprice Mini V2 uses a closed source and excellent firmware designed to work with all slicer software such as Cura or Simplify3D. The onboard colourful display is very easy to use providing setup guidance and printer status during printing.

The printing connectivity can be made through microSD, USB or Wi-Fi. However, Wi-Fi stream printing can be very slow to load a print.

Advantages & Disadvantages
PROS
  • High quality for PLA filament.
  • Colorful and intuitive interface.
  • Compact and portable.
  • Heated print bed.
  • All-metal E3D V6 clone extruder.
CONS
  • Difficult print for ABS or Flexible filament due to print bed temperature and Bowden extrusion system respectively.
  • Poor Wi-Fi connection.
  • Small print bed size.
  • Closed source firmware.
  • Single cooling fan for heatsink extruder and filament extruder.
  • Low printing speed.
  • Manual levelling.
Print Performance

Regarding the print quality, the Monoprice Select Mini V2 really reproduces great 3D printed objects thanks to its sturdy frame and great extruder. Although the frame is very solid, some wobbling can be seen during printing as the x-axis is just hold from one side. PLA filament is the best option if you want to get smooth surfaces, however it may struggles with more advanced materials due to the bowden system. Advanced users claim that modifying the default retraction settings you can obtain optimum print performance so bear that in mind!

Conclusion

Monoprice Select Mini V2 is an upgraded 3D printer with a heated print bed. It is an excellent printer for small models and PLA filaments. However, it can get short for high temperature materials due to the low print bed temperature. The firmware is excellent, intuitive and very easy to use, providing many printing options: USB, MicroSD and Wi-Fi.  In general, the printer performance is great in comparison to other printers on the same price range. Although it seems to be a plug & play 3D printer, it is not really designed for beginners as it requires experience and adjustments to achieve high quality results.
